It’s an inspiring story of a rebel teenager who became the best tattoo artist in India.
It all started, in the year 1997 when a casual walk to the clinic of Dr. Jehangir Kohiyar an elite psychiatrist and back then the only Professional Tattoo Artist in India, transformed the fate of 16 year old Sameer Patange. Dr. Kohiyar affectionately known as Jangoo, brought the art of Tattooing to India in the 1960s. It was because of Sameer’s outstanding skill at drawing and painting that he was immediately offered a weekend job to assist and draw for Dr. Kohiyar.
Even though Sameer Patange came from a modest and conservative family background and back then tattooing as a profession was considered as a taboo, he chose to pursue his passion for arts and joined Dr. Kohiyar at his clinic in South Mumbai.
As they say, “Rebels” stop at none, the rebel hearted teenager Sameer took the leap of faith and began his exciting journey from a teenager to become the pioneer of the Indian Tattoo industry, as we know today.
Working alongside and for Dr. Kohiyar for 6 long years it was apparent that Sameer would excel in this art form and follow the path of Mr. Anil Gupta who was Dr. Kohiyar’s only Prodigy in the 80’s making waves in the western world. Mr Anil Gupta is now one of the top Artists in the world living and working in New York.
Further creating waves by his art, Sameer became the most sought after and the youngest tattoo artist in the country. His expertise involved the most radicle and out of the box artistic pieces.
Sameer was one the very few artists in India, being featured in a documentary by BBC Media, a world renowned international media network. He received spotlight from all the major media houses in India, featuring his breathtaking body art pieces which were way ahead of their time.
In 2004 saw Sameer making a radicle decision to establish a name for himself by following the instincts and aid of his trusting friends, moved base to western suburbs from South Mumbai and then began his solo career in the still emerging tattoo industry.
From working at a friend’s recording studio to a friend’s salon he managed to do it all until 2005. Opportunity struck when Sameer was offered a stake and chance to have his own studio at Suniel Shetty’s project, “Hakim’s Aalim” along with Aalim himself the celebrity hair stylist.
Then in 2008 Sameer Patange started from scratch and spearheaded the Kraayonz Movement by simultaneously opening 4 tattoo studios across the country in Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Goa.
